One federal principle, different cantonal procedures
Premium subsidies reduce the cost of mandatory basic health insurance for people of modest means. They do not reduce supplementary-insurance premiums. Each canton defines eligibility, the amount, the application process and how the subsidy is paid. Some cantons identify recipients automatically; others require an application. The authority — not the insurer or adviser — makes the decision, so no award or amount can be guaranteed in advance.
Geneva: automatic for many, but not for everyone
For 2026, Geneva generally calculates the subsidy automatically from 2024 income. You must nevertheless apply if the administration cannot establish your current right from that file. The official list includes young adults born from 2001 to 2007, people taxed at source in 2024, arrivals in Geneva during 2025 or 2026, people with very low declared 2024 income, certain higher-income or higher-wealth households, and people without an ordinary 2024 assessment or assessed ex officio. A recent economic or family change can also justify a request.
Geneva deadlines for a changed situation or a recent arrival
For a 2026 change in economic or family circumstances, Geneva asks for the completed form and supporting evidence by 30 November 2026. If the change occurs from 1 July to 31 December 2026, the extended deadline is 30 June 2027. People who moved to Geneva in 2025 or 2026 generally apply by 30 November 2026; those arriving from 1 November 2026 have until 30 June 2027. These dates are specific to the named procedures, so use the form matching your situation rather than assuming one deadline covers every case.
Cross-border residents insured under Swiss LAMal
Living in France does not automatically exclude a Geneva subsidy. Geneva provides a dedicated application for people resident in an EU/EFTA state or the United Kingdom who are affiliated with Swiss LAMal and have modest means. Eligibility still depends on the authority’s assessment and the requested documents. Use the cross-border form and do not rely on the deadlines for Geneva residents unless the official instructions say they apply to your case.
Vaud: make a formal application
Vaud requires an application, online or through a regional social-insurance agency. Prepare your basic-insurance policy and the financial documents requested by the cantonal health-insurance office (OVAM). If your present finances differ by more than 20% — upwards or downwards — from the tax assessment used, Vaud says the subsidy is calculated using recent income and asset evidence. Report marriage and other household changes promptly: an overpayment can be reclaimed. After a move from another canton, the Vaud entitlement normally begins on 1 January following arrival, with stated exceptions for certain benefits.
A practical file checklist
Before submitting, identify the competent canton and the exact applicant category; download the current form; collect the latest tax decision, recent salary or benefit evidence, household and civil-status information, and the basic-insurance policy requested; explain any material change since the reference tax year; and retain the completed form, attachments and proof of submission. Missing documents can delay the decision. Continue paying the invoices issued by your insurer until an adjusted statement arrives.
After the decision: reconcile the insurer’s invoice
The subsidy is paid directly to the insurer, which reduces the premium invoiced to you. In Vaud, a retroactive adjustment can produce a refund or a credit on later premiums. Compare the authority’s decision with the insurer’s statement and report discrepancies. Subsidy eligibility and choosing a suitable insurance model are separate questions: first establish the aid, then review the remaining premium, deductible, care pathway and annual out-of-pocket budget.
