1. Register the move first
Notify your departure to the old municipality and your arrival to the new one. The Swiss authorities’ portal states that arrival generally has to be reported within 14 days of moving; many cantons support eDéménagementCH. Keep the official moving date and registration confirmation because insurers and cantonal offices may request them. Foreign residents should also check whether their permit record or cantonal migration file needs updating.
2. Recalculate basic health insurance for the new address
Your compulsory basic-insurance policy does not disappear because you cross a cantonal border, but the premium can change. The Federal Office of Public Health confirms that premiums depend partly on the premium region of the municipality of residence. For 2027, the official regional classification has already been published. Send the insurer the new address and effective date, then request the revised premium in writing.
Run a fresh comparison on Priminfo using the new municipality or postcode, age group, deductible, accident option and care model. A move is not a reason to ignore the normal statutory switching dates: confirm any proposed insurer change separately. Do not cancel basic cover until the replacement process is valid and coordinated.
3. Check whether your care pathway still works
A restricted model can require a designated medical practice, telemedicine service, partner pharmacy or approved network. The FOPH’s 2027 categories are PRAXIS, TEL_DIG, PHARM and FLEX. Before the move, ask whether your current doctor or network remains valid, how to select a new first point of contact and whether existing specialist referrals continue. Obtain the answer before arranging non-urgent treatment.
Hospital planning also deserves a check. For elective inpatient treatment outside the hospital list of the new canton of residence, the FOPH explains that a tariff difference may remain payable by the patient or a supplementary policy unless there is an emergency or a particular medical reason. If treatment is already planned, ask the basic insurer and any hospital supplementary insurer for written cost confirmation after the address change.
4. Do not assume the premium subsidy follows automatically
Premium-reduction procedures are cantonal and coordination can differ by benefit type. Geneva’s current 2026 FAQ says that an ordinary subsidy normally remains the responsibility of the canton where the person lived on 1 January until year-end, while social-assistance and supplementary-benefit cases follow different rules. Vaud’s 2026 notice tells people leaving for another canton to file a new application in the destination canton because the right is not automatically transferred. Notify both cantonal offices promptly, identify which benefit you receive and ask each office to confirm the responsible period in writing.
5. Update household, liability and vehicle records
Tell the household and personal-liability insurer about the new address, property type, number of occupants and moving date. Review the insured contents amount, theft-away-from-home limits, valuable items and any landlord-required liability certificate. A move does not create a universal right to cancel every private policy: the contract wording and the insurer’s written position are decisive.
For a vehicle, notify the motor insurer and the registration authority in the destination canton; an electronic proof of compulsory motor liability may be needed before new documents or plates are issued. Deadlines are authority-specific. As a concrete example, Vaud requires personal-data changes to be reported to its vehicle service within 14 days and also tells residents to register with the population office. Check the destination canton rather than relying on the old canton’s procedure.
A short moving checklist
- Before moving: list every policy and authority, planned treatment, current subsidy and vehicle.
- At the move: register the address, save proof and notify insurers with the exact effective date.
- After confirmation: compare the revised health premium, validate the care pathway and check subsidy and vehicle follow-up.
