Name your priorities
List specific needs such as hospital options, dental care, recognised alternative practitioners, travel assistance or fitness reimbursement. Rank them and ask for the exact benefit schedule. “Private health insurance” is a broad phrase: it does not identify a single package with standard benefits across insurers.
Read limits with the premium
For each priority, record the reimbursement percentage, maximum amount, recognised provider requirements and possible waiting period. Check how several benefits interact rather than adding brochure maxima together. Ask what would remain payable in a realistic example, and whether there are exclusions specific to your acceptance.
Review before replacing
Compare the quoted benefits with the policy you already hold. Obtain the replacement insurer’s written decision before cancelling valuable existing cover. Keep supplementary and basic-insurance decisions separate. A package is useful when its relevant protection justifies its cost, not merely because it contains a long list of benefits.
