Semi-private or private hospital cover: what to compare

Room category is the beginning of the comparison, not the end.

Describe the experience you want

Start with concrete priorities: room arrangement, doctor choice, particular hospitals and treatment outside your home canton. Ask the insurer to explain how the proposed contract handles each. Product labels such as private, semi-private or flex are not a substitute for the benefit schedule and hospital list.

Understand your own contribution

Request examples of the amount you would pay for a stay under the quoted option. Check any percentage contribution, annual ceiling, deductible or advance-approval requirement. Keep these figures separate from basic-insurance cost sharing. A hospital cash benefit also works differently from reimbursement of the hospital’s bill.

Secure acceptance before replacing cover

Read the written acceptance, including exclusions, start date and any waiting period, before giving up existing protection. If you value your current cover, compare carefully what could be lost. A cheaper monthly premium is not sufficient evidence that a replacement provides the same hospital access or protection.
