Treat basic and supplementary insurance as separate decisions
A different basic insurer does not automatically mean replacing every health policy you hold. You can keep supplementary insurance with your existing provider while moving basic cover elsewhere. CSS explicitly confirms this possibility. Start by putting your policies into two groups: compulsory basic insurance and optional supplementary products. This guide concerns residents insured under the Swiss compulsory system; if your situation involves cross-border work or residence abroad, ask for a separate review of the applicable arrangements.
Compare the approved 2027 premiums
The Federal Office of Public Health has published the 2027 premium information. Its official comparison tool is Priminfo. Use the same postcode, age, accident-cover selection, deductible and insurance model when comparing options. Write down the current and proposed monthly premiums side by side, with the year clearly marked. A useful comparison identifies what changes in your day-to-day arrangements as well as the price. Keep the dated results with the offer you are considering.
Plan for receipt by 30 November 2026
For a basic-insurance switch taking effect on 1 January 2027, your current insurer must receive your cancellation by 30 November 2026. Sending it that day is not enough. Priminfo recommends sending written notice by registered mail or A-Post Plus before 15 November. Register with the new insurer too, and keep evidence of delivery and the new cover. Unpaid amounts covered by the statutory rules can prevent a switch: if you have arrears, clarify them with your insurer before relying on the planned change.
Read the access rules and deductible together
Under a restricted-provider model, the first contact may be a designated doctor, medical network or telemedicine service. A lower premium therefore needs to be considered alongside how you normally seek care. Ask for the actual model rules and exceptions before choosing. The FOPH also explains that a higher deductible reduces the premium but leaves more initial treatment costs to pay yourself. Compare the annual premium with an amount you could realistically fund if you needed care; the monthly price alone is not the whole budget.
Check supplementary cover before cancelling anything
The 30 November basic-insurance deadline is not a universal deadline for supplementary contracts. FINMA says the contract documents determine the insurance year and relevant cancellation conditions. Review them individually. A new supplementary insurer may assess health information, impose restrictions or decline cover. FINMA recommends waiting for confirmation of the desired new supplementary insurance before cancelling the existing policy. Read the acceptance and exclusions carefully, and compare provider lists, benefit limits and your own share of costs.
Prepare a short review pack
Gather your current policies, your 2027 renewal notice, the proposed offer and any questions about access to care. Add a short list of the supplementary benefits that actually matter to you: for example hospital accommodation, dental cover or prevention benefits. Beside each priority, note what you already have and what you want clarified. This simple working document helps keep a discussion focused and makes it easier to spot an accidental cancellation, a missing answer or an assumption that needs checking.
Choose a clear next step
If you want help organising the comparison, book a free, no-obligation first call with Mathias Sudres using the booking link below. We can review your priorities in English or French and identify which details need confirmation before you decide. Prepare both basic and supplementary policies, even if you only intend to change one. The aim is a decision you understand, with the cancellation, start date and existing protections considered together. No particular saving or acceptance of supplementary cover is guaranteed.
